So Friday I am first in the pool, it’s warm, it’s a good start to the day. I start of slowly, different styles of stokes to warm up the muscles. *tweak*
Each lap feels good, the day feels good, there’s optimism, people are responding to our appeal *twinge*
This is going to be mile 30, wow, what an accomplishment…*zap*
Ok, something is hurting in the left arm, ok, I’ll adjust the stroke a little.
*zing* ok that didn’t work and it’s getting worse, fast….
22 laps in…benched!
Left arm, shooting pains from the pinky finger, through the wrist into the elbow. By the time I climb out of the pool they are going up the shoulder into the neck.
It started on the “pull” portion of the stroke. The “downsweep” as it is referred. And it’s the sharp numbing pain of tendinitis or the like.
I tried different stokes, pretending I only had an arm to the elbow and swimming, but it would twinge rather badly with each movement. I tried to get to 36 laps, so could even just log half a mile, but the pain was too much, and I knew I was risking REALLY hurting myself.
So I threw in the towel, got out of the pool and ended the effort.
I spent the day popping Advil because the ache was pretty intense, and while I’ve got a high pain tolerance, I needed to focus.
Crawling around the Google, leads me to believe technique maybe the issue.
But in the meantime, I hang my head in shame, as I was warned. I was warned I was going at it too hard. But in my messed up head, slow down = lazy.
So I’m taking the weekend to rest. Sure I could hit the gym and bike for a while, but seeing as I’m losing and gaining the same 5 pounds, I’m thinking exhaustion could be what’s hindering my progress right now. So I’m going to take a rest weekend and see what I can do snow shoveling wise. Could be interesting.
I’m frustrated as I feel more athletic than I’ve felt since my teen years, but until I drop more body fat, I certainly won’t look it. And while I keep reminding myself it’s how I FEEL not how I LOOK that matters, I know that’s only about 70% true.
